Hand made model of the Dutch ship Peerboom, as conceived by the artist, Charles Cozewith. The Peerboom sailed in 1654 from Amsterdam to New Amsterdam via London, bringing a group of Jewish settlers to America. The new community founded Congregation Shearith Israel which endures as the oldest Jewish congregation in the U.S. Constructed in 2017, the ship is a replica of a fluit which was a type of ship commonly used by the Dutch in the 17th century. |
